Hi i am going to a fancy dress and i want to know how to : make a cloak, make a tunic, a leather looking breastplate and lotr brooch that the fellowship gets from lothlorien
Ranger colors tend to be earth tones, such as muted greens, grays, browns, russets, and charcoal gray/black. To make a cloak you want to cut out a semicircle of cloth. Measure from your collarbone down to your ankle, and double it - that is the length of the long straight side of the semicircle. Cut out a smaller semicircular area at the exact middle of the long side for your neckhole. Hem all edges and sew on a "frog" closure at the neck. (These are available at most sewing centers.)
Make a short sleeved tunic by folding a rectangle of cloth over with the top of the tunic being the fold. Measure from bicep to bicep with your arms straight out at shoulder level. This is your top measurement. Find the center and cut your neck hole. Measure down about a foot on each side for your sleeves, and then measure back in for your torso , which should be your chest measurement at its widest plus about ten inches. Remember to keep it loose, not tight - a swordsman needs room to move in his clothes. Cut it long enough to fall to mid-thigh. Sew up the sides to the sleeves and hem all edges. Wear this over a long sleeved, simple shirt.
A breastplate is a little trickier. If you do not have access to real leather, try upholstery vinyl in natural brown. Cut out a template in cardboard first and size it until you find a shape and size that fits. If you are using vinyl, sew it to a backing of heavy canvas or 3-4 layers of thick denim. Paint or applique whatever design you want to the front. Get a large candle and melt it in a pan over medium heat. Be very careful: wax is flammable. Bring the wax up to a boil and then back off on the heat if it starts to "smoke" or evaporate. Using a natural fiber brush, coat the denim lining on the INSIDE of the breastplate until it is saturated with the wax and wipe off any excess. Use extreme caution when working with boiling wax and wear old clothes. Clean your brush afterwards by holding it in a pan of boiling water - the wax will melt and float to the surface. Carefully fit the breastplate onto your chest while it is WARM, not hot, and let it cool. As the wax hardens the breastplate will conform to the shape of your body, becoming rigid and retaining its shape. A good way to do this quickly is to fit it to your torso and then step into a cool shower - the water will quickly cool the breastplate. Use a hairdryer to rewarm it if it doesn't fit right the first time. If you are using real leather use the same method, but do any stain or paint work on your leather first - once waxed it will not accept stain or paint, as the wax makes it waterproof. Make both a front and back plate, and punch holes for grommets up both sides and on the shoulders. Lace the breast and backplates together. You can get grommet kits at Wal-Mart in the sewing area. Two on each shoulder and four or five up each side should do.
As for the brooch, you can purchase the "official" brooches online, but in reality any leafy, elvish looking cloak clasp will do, or try a pennannular brooch. They can be ordered from numerous merchants, try cs@PillagedVillage.com or drachenstein@dragonsjewels.com for help or suggestions.
In all cases I would use wool/cotton blends for the cloak and tunic, with a cotton shirt and simple pants tucked into tall black boots.
